Gayton McKenzie, the newly appointed Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, has expressed his support for the legalisation of sports betting in South Africa. McKenzie believes that regulated sports betting can bring numerous benefits to the country, contrasting with opinions that suggest it could cause harm. He noted, "People bet anyway. When I grew up, my father and uncles used to bet on Kaizer Chiefs and Swallows. There are many sites out there, but now it is regulated."
A strong advocate for the involvement of betting companies in sports sponsorship, McKenzie criticised the current opposition to such partnerships. He argued that the financial support from these companies could be vital for young athletes needing funding and exposure. McKenzie stated, "There are so many kids [young sports stars] that need funding and sponsorship exposure. That money can help them. There are ways where people can get help from addiction. You cannot deny people from becoming sports stars."
McKenzie's department has recently concluded its budget vote, which will see R108 million distributed to various sports federations. He highlighted the importance of accountability and effective use of these funds, citing the example of netball, which received R5 million in the last financial year and demonstrated significant progress. "Corporates in South Africa get a lot of flak because they don’t want to sponsor, that is not the case. People want accountability," McKenzie remarked. He assured that the funds would go to those who have shown transparency and a genuine commitment to developing sports.
