Outgoing Sibanye Stillwater CEO Neal Froneman has revealed plans to back a new Formula One-standard race track near Cape Town, potentially transforming South Africa into a global motorsport destination. The proposed venue, with locations such as Melkbosstrand under consideration, would be designed to host both F1 and MotoGP events. Formula One has not visited South Africa since 1993, when the last race was held at Kyalami.

Froneman has compared the scale of building a new F1 track to developing a gold mine, citing the long-term investment required. He stressed that Cape Town has the infrastructure, tourism appeal, and international reputation to support a world-class racing spectacle, adding that it could be a more attractive destination than Gauteng for global visitors.
